Obedience to Law

Doctrine and Covenants 58:21–22, 26–28

21 Let no man break the laws of the land, for he that keepeth the laws of God hath no need to break the laws of the land.
22 Wherefore, be subject to the powers that be, until he reigns whose right it is to reign, and subdues all enemies under his feet. . . .
26 For behold, it is not meet that I should command in all things; for he that is compelled in all things, the same is a slothful and not a wise servant; wherefore he receiveth no reward.
27 Verily I say, men should be anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of their own free will, and bring to pass much righteousness;
28 For the power is in them, wherein they are agents unto themselves. And inasmuch as men do good they shall in nowise lose their reward.

President Marion G. Romney said:

“The Lord has commanded us to obey both His law and the laws of the land. ‘For,’ said He, ‘verily I say unto you, my law shall be kept on this land.’ And further, ‘Let no man break the laws of the land, for he that keepeth the laws of God hath no need to break the laws of the land’ (D&C 58:19, 21).”
