“Concern Not Yourselves about Your Debts”

Doctrine and Covenants 111:5–6

5 Concern not yourselves about your debts, for I will give you power to pay them.
6 Concern not yourselves about Zion, for I will deal mercifully with her.

Elder Hyrum M. Smith and Janne M. Sjödahl wrote:

“When the Kirtland Temple was dedicated, the Church was indebted to the amount of between thirteen and fourteen thousand dollars, and this debt, no doubt, was a heavy burden upon the shoulders of the leaders. But the Lord knew that the Saints had exerted themselves to the utmost, and He, therefore, gave this comforting promise.

“. . . Another source of anxiety at this time was the condition of Zion. The Saints had been driven from Jackson County, and there was no prospect of a speedy change in the public sentiment. The Lord, therefore, told His servants not to harbor undue anxiety for the scattered Saints. He would be merciful to them. The plans and purposes of God concerning His people were not frustrated.”
