“Hearken, O Ye Who Have Given Your Names to Go Forth to Proclaim My Gospel”
Doctrine and Covenants 75:1–2
1 Verily, verily, I say unto you, I who speak even by the voice of my Spirit, even Alpha and Omega, your Lord and your God—
2 Hearken, O ye who have given your names to go forth to proclaim my gospel, and to prune my vineyard.
Elder Hyrum M. Smith and Janne M. Sjödahl wrote:
“The date of the Amherst [Ohio] conference had now arrived. [At this conference the Prophet Joseph was ordained as President of the High Priesthood.] The elders who had been promised instructions, by revelation, concerning their duties as missionaries, were present, and eager for the word of the Lord through His inspired servant. In answer to prayer this revelation [D&C 75] was received . . .
“. . . When the elders of the Church can say, in all sincerity, with Samuel of old, ‘Speak; for thy servant heareth’ [1 Sam. 3:10], then the Lord can use them in the ministry.”
