“I Lifted Up Mine Eyes Again, and Looked, and Behold a Man with a Measuring Line . . . to Measure Jerusalem”

(See Zechariah 2:1–13.)

Dr. Ellis T. Rasmussen wrote:

“In the vision, the prophet asked the intent of a young man with a measuring line who was seeking to know the length and breadth of the future city of Jerusalem. The prophet’s angelic guide interceded and he received assurance that Jerusalem would be much greater than a measured, walled city: it will be inhabited by a multitude. There will be no need for walls, for the Lord ‘will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the glory in the midst of her’ (Zech. 2:5). This vision doubtless comforted the people of the time, but it pertains even more to the future Zion, in which the Lord will dwell.

“Latter-day events were presaged in the call summoning Israel ‘from the land of the north’ and the invitation to future Zion to deliver herself from the last ‘Babylon,’ the wicked world [Zech. 2:6–7 and footnotes]. All who oppose that last gathering of Israel will be opposed by the Lord, and Zion will ‘sing and rejoice’ at the presence of the Lord dwelling in the midst of her. Then the ancient Abrahamic mission will come to fruition, for ‘many nations shall be joined to the Lord in that day, and shall be my people.’ ‘All flesh’ will be reverent when the Lord comes from His holy habitation and dwells upon earth [Zech. 2:8–13 and footnotes].”

(A Latter-day Saint Commentary on the Old Testament [1993], 682.)
