The Israelites Murmur for Lack of Water, and the Waters of Marah Are Healed So They Can Drink

Exodus 15:22–25

22 So Moses brought Israel from the Red sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness, and found no water.
23 And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter: therefore the name of it was called Marah.
24 And the people murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink?
25 And he cried unto the Lord; and the Lord shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them . . .

Elder Bruce R. McConkie wrote:

“Both Moses and Jesus had control over mighty waters. The one stretched forth his hand over the Red Sea, the waters divided, and Israel went through on dry ground, with walls of water congealed on the right hand and on the left. The Other walked on the waters of the Galilean Sea and also commanded the wind and the waves to cease their tempestuous raging. Moses turned the water at Marah from bitter to sweet and smote the rock at the waters of Meribah, in both instances providing drink for thirsting Israel. Our Lord smites the rocks of unbelief and rebellion in the hearts of sinful men, so that all who will may drink living water and thirst no more forever.”
