Daily “Come, Follow Me” Scripture and Quote – Old Testament, Lesson 34, Day 4

“Come and See the Works of God: He Is Terrible in His Doing toward the Children of Men”

(See Psalm 66:1–20.)

Dr. Ellis T. Rasmussen wrote:

“Psalm 66 is a lyrical song.

“The Hebrew word translated joyful noise means ‘an outcry in joy or need.’ In King James English, terrible was adequate to translate the Hebrew, but its connotations make it inaccurate in our day; awe-inspiring is more suitable now (Ps. 66:3, 5).

“Because of all the awe-inspiring works of God, all shall worship Him and sing to the honor of His name. God’s miraculous saving of Israel at the Red Sea is hinted at, and his overruling power is proclaimed; therefore the people are invited to acknowledge Him as the sustainer of life. All who have been tested, tried, and proved faithful will be saved. Then all may go to the house of worship and to the temple with their offerings and fulfill their vows.

“Psalm 66 concludes with a testimony.”

(A Latter-day Saint Commentary on the Old Testament [1993], 435.)
